Mocho, our production workshop
Clandestina’s workshop is located in the Bauta region on the outskirts of Havana in a place called Cayo la Rosa, near the textile Factory Ariguanabo.
The textile factory, which was founded by an American in 1931, was dismantled little by little during the “Special Period” in Cuba beginning in 1991 after the fall of the Soviet Union. However, the people who lived in the area guarded zealously their skills and sewing know-how that they had learned over the past 60 years from the company, and that knowledge was passed down from generation to generation.
Idania’s grandmother worked in the textile factory. One day, Idania and Leire decided to visit Cornelia, a friend and co-worker of her grandmother’s. Cornelia in turn introduced them to Ana Lourdes, representative of the new generation of seamstresses and bearer of the knowledge of various generations who had learned the art.
With Ana Lourdes and a few other seamstresses, we built a small workshop that produces exclusively Clandestina designs, 99% designed in Cuba.
